March 2001 Telcotimes Newsletter 17 March 2001 HONG KONG - March 12, 2001 - The Asia Pacific Cable Network 2 (APCN 2)has landed in Hong Kong. The network is a 19,000 kilometer-long fiber optic cable system that will connect China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Taiwan. It is expected to be operational by the end of September. APCN 2 is being constructed by Japan's NEC Corp, and the cost of the project is approaching $1 billion. APCN 2's biggest shareholder is Reach, the international Internet backbone venture of Australia's Telstra, and Hong Kong's Pacific Century CyberWorks. Shield Telecommunications Operating Arm Layer 2 Communications Ltd is an initial party to APCN2 with ownership equal to majors such as SingTel, China Telecom and other key regional carriers. |
